Our Review
100% Nylon and stretch. “What no Lycra?” you can almost hear the shouts of disbelief from younger hosiery wearers. But yes there was a time before Lycra when just the knit was used to provide stretch and some makers still follow this tradition.
15 denier is a sensible everyday weight, balancing a sheer look with practical durability and is perhaps the most common for both stockings and tights.
Stretch there may be but Gerbe still see the need to make these stockings in no fewer than seven sizes from 0 to 6. The size chart goes on to define 7 & 8 too but they are not available in this style.
Our first impression on handling these stockings was of their lightness. We were going to add simplicity to that but then realised there is both a reinforced toe and a fully shaped, reinforced but almost invisible heel detail.
No fuss at the welt, just fine finishing and a plain top that looks like it will take a suspender perfectly
Our test pair came in size 5 this in common with the largest size (6) is intended to fit up to a height of 185 cm (6’1”). The differentiation is in weight only with size 5 aiming to cope with an absolute maximum of 95 kg (209 lbs).
The sizing is accurate as far as it goes. Our model was taller than the suggested maximum but then stockings can finish anywhere from mid-thigh upwards just so long as you have a quality suspender belt with adjustable straps. In fact there was very little need to adjust straps on the StockingsHQ 6-strap V-clip belt that we used for the test. But we can’t hep but feel that foot and leg length and perhaps thigh circumference might have been better numbers to use for sizing. Maybe even real stockings sizing?.
It was foot length and the resulting position of the heel that really let these stockings down. If you are 6’1 you are unlikely to have dainty feet and we found that the heel detail was entirely under the foot and quite wasted.
In every other way these stockings are lovely. Perfectly even colour, matt finish and once coupled to a good suspender belt a great fit, look and feel. The welt is one of the easiest to attach suspender straps too and the connection is safe and secure.
The texture on the finish gives a real swish when you cross your legs.
Proof that you can get a really good fit and a bit of stretch without Lycra. A great choice of stocking for any time of day just so long as you don’t have big feet.
