Our Review Our sister site TightsFashion has reviewed pretty well the complete range of Wolford sheer and opaque tights plus a good number of their seasonal fashion tights too but this is the first pair of stockings we have seen from Wolford. We are surprised that we have not looked at them before, but not that they are hold ups rather than classic stockings requiring a suspender belt as Wolford make at least 5 times as many hold up styles as they do classic stockings. £23 is certainly not cheap for a pair of 10 denier hold ups, and as I write I can hear a chorus of protest from devotees of classic fully fashioned stockings shouting that you can get “the real thing” from Gio for much less. In Wolford’s defence we have to say that the price differential between these stockings and their equivalent tights in much smaller than the premium most brands charge. Full marks to Wolford for producing a hold-up specific size chart rather than use one designed for tights as so many manufacturers do; what relevance has waist and hip size to the it of garments that finish on the thigh have anyway? The chart uses a combination of dress size and thigh circumference, one a measurement every lady knows (although perhaps does not share) the other will require a few seconds in private with a tape measure. We got our test pair in Large because our model wears large tights (yes I know... ), a quick measure after the fact suggested they are on the Medium/Large boundary. You might expect something special for the price but what you find on opening the packet appears very ordinary, a plain 4cm deep elastic welt with two quite narrow silicone bands topping a plain leg slightly shaped at the heel and finished with a reinforced toe. What in not ordinary is the quality of the workmanship and material. the toe seam and the seam between welt and stocking are simply perfect, the legs feel just incredibly smooth and soft... sublime. If there are hold ups easier to put on we have not seen them. Simply bunch them up, put your foot on with your hands either side and runs you hand up your leg painting the stockings on before depositing the welt at the top of your thigh. No pulling, no adjusting, no smoothing... you are dressed and ready to go in seconds. The welt grips securely without squeezing and will stay in place all day, but the stockings fit so close on the leg they feel as though they would not move anyway. Sizing is accurate and you need have no worries about leg length not being mentioned in the sizing these stockings stretch and stretch. The matt finish is completely flawless throughout, perfect even colour and silky soft.Look and feel are both just perfect, you could be forgiven for cancelling your date and just sitting in looking at your legs and stroking them! Worth £23? You bet, every penny. Perhaps not for everyday wear but when you want to look and feel your best these are the hold ups to wear. And being Wolford we are sure they will last and last too. 18 July 2011 |
